New Studio!
Work in Progress

Page: 1  2

The images above show all the preliminary ground work. The studio is going beside our house where eventually will also be a vegetable garden, a small green house, a few bee hives, fruit trees etc. We bought this house 5 years ago and it was a total wreck inside and out. The previous occupants for the past 50 years or so NEVER threw garbage away properly, they threw it in the yard where we have been digging it up and paying to have it taken away, for the past 5 years. You wouldn't believe what we've found in the yard...you name it, we've probably found it :/ So the yard doesn't look like much yet but my husband has wonderful plans for it :) Ok back to the studio...

The pictures show the plot, the gravel and finally the concrete slabs which will be the foundation. He started work on this in mid-june 2006. We've been waiting for the house to arrive for the past 5 weeks.

Yay! It finally got here! My husband is the guy in red, oh and by the way, my husband is NOT a small man, the guy by the truck is just really BIG...lol!. Of course it is rainy and overcast today so we may not get to do much. Peer (my husband) took the day off so we could try and get as much setup today as possible...naturally it would rain :/

The weather gave us a bit of a break today! After he got home from work, Peer drilled  holes in the concrete slabs and then anchored the floor beams in place.  Tomorrow I think the floor boards go on, if the weather holds. We've got a victim...er, I mean a friend coming over on Saturday so with luck the house itself might be finished this weekend.

Thursday August 24, 2006

We're working on putting the floorboards down today, Peer isn't very impressed with my hammering skills, after I missed the nail and dented the wood twice in a row, he took the hammer away..
So I get to be the grunt and carry the boards when he needs them. Peer managed to get about a quarter of them nailed down when all of a sudden...can you guess?...yep, you guessed it. It started to rain!

I just realized with Peer standing in there that geez my house looks kinda small, but actually it's twice as big as where I am working right now so I'm sure it will seem like a palace by comparison!

I've been having lots of fun ordering stuff. Today I recieved my stereo...gotta have tunes! The one I am currently using only plays in mono and you just can't listen to rock properly in mono! I found a few prints for the walls too. A few by Gustav Klimt and Rosina Wachtmeister so far. I'm searching for a good toad poster... sort of a mascot and guardian for my studio. The one I really want is this one, but he's sort of hard to find.

So, the rain stopped again. Peer is back outside pounding nails. More tomorrow!

Sunday August 27, 2006

Saturday it rained the whole day. We had a friend come over to help but didn't get anything at all done. Today we got a break :)  Peer's children were here and they were a big help. The walls went up much faster than I expected...ok so we put them togther backwards the first time around but we finally got them fitted the right way. Then the pointy roof pieces...also put on backwards the first time :p  Peer was working on the beams when the rain finally came. We managed to get most of the pieces inside and got the tarp on before it really began to down pour. Of course the tarp is a bit too short so the rain leaked in at the back. And now that the ground is nothing but mud, the cat decides she needs to check it out....little muddy cat prints all over the floor, so I made a cat door...it's not much but is seemed to do the trick :)
Friday September 1, 2006

It rained all week long so nothing on the house has changed except we bought a larger tarp since the rain was running down the walls and warping the floorboards :/

This afternoon we are hitting the hardware stores. We're looking at counter tops and hood vents for the work area, shelving and rain pipes for glass storage, woodburning stoves so I don't freeze my butt off this winter, and lots of other little things like electrical outlets and light switches, lamps, chairs, etc. If we can't build at least we can get the stuff we will need eventually to finish the inside. The weatherman calls for rain on and off  over the whole weekend,  so I have my fingers crossed that it will be mostly OFF...lol!

Sunday September 3, 2006

Finally! We have a roof!
Yesterday Peer and I worked all afternoon getting those @!!$% boards up! Typical of all things that come in kits, pieces just do not fit like they are suppose to. We put screws in, took screws back out, readjusted boards, put screws in again, and then borrowed a skill saw to cut off the pieces that didn't line up (like they were suppose to!). Peer had a bad day and was really over it by the time we finished...but, the roof's on now, and it looks great!

Today is probably going to be a rain day again, it's really dark and damp out. We're probably going to try and get the windows in. We still need to put the tar paper on the roof but need a nicer day for that.

Friday September 8, 2006

Windows! Yay!  Actually there's a door now too but I forgot to take a picture. The door is a sensitive subject so we aren't discussing it right now. Honestly the whole kit has been a major pain in the ass. Things not fitting like they are supposed to, boards that are too long or too short. Ok, the doorframe opening is larger that it should be so we're going to have to get creative in order to make the door open and shut properly. Would I recommend a kit from this company? NO!!! But we've paid for it, we've built most of it...in otherwords, they have us by the short hairs.

On the brighter side, all the stuff we ordered for the inside arrived today. Peer's at the hardware store getting electical stuff so maybe we can get that part done today. More tomorrow!

Wednesday September 13, 2006

What a nice coincidence! On Saturday we began with the electrical stuff, running the main wire around the walls, putting in outlets etc. A friend who also happens to be an electrician called and wanted to come for a visit. Well, of course we said yes..lol! He didn't know he'd end up working when he got here

The first picture is Peer putting in a meter so we will know exactly how much electricity the studio uses. Then Andre showed up and just started working...it was great!

We also got the work bench in place, it will be covered with ceramic tiles which I love to work on, I've tried working on sheet metal and I hate the feel, tiles are much nicer. Anyway, there is Andre and his new baby, just 3 months old.
The last picture shows... Light! Yay, it actually works! The little girl with the red glowing eyes is another of Andre's children (some of the best behaved children I have ever met, no joke, these kids are wonderful) and in the background is his wife. They were a huge, huge help and a really nice family.

We've gotten more done since then but I need to get out there and take some pictures, so more soon!

OK, I think this page has gotten long enough so I've started another page, click the link below to go to page 2.
